High voltage direct current (HVDC) cable systems with extruded insulation are becoming increasingly attractive versus the traditional mass impregnated non-draining (MIND) HVDC cable systems [1]. Voltage and power ratings of HVDC extruded cable systems commercially available - after being qualified according to CIGRE Technical Brochure (TB) 496 [2] - are exceeding 500 to 600 kV and 1 GW, respectively [3]-[6]. Of course, HVDC extruded cable systems still have issues. © 2006 IEEE.
