Thus the term "God" is used, not simply to designate the collection of disparate cosmic powers that have produced us, but to focus our attention and commitment to this process. Why continue to use the ancient term? "Why not just speak of 'cosmic and historical forces' working toward humanization and ecological order?" The answer in part lies in the need to connect ourselves with the historical past in order to see our place in the trajectory moving into the future.
