First isolation of a Spiroplasma (Mollicutes: Spiroplasmataceae) from biting midges (Diptera:Ceratopogonidae)

A survey of biting midges during 1997 in Maryland for the presence of the cell wall-less prokaryotes, Spiroplasma, yielded an isolate (GNAT3597) from the ceratopogonid genus Atrichopogon. This is the first report of a biting midge-spiroplasma association and preliminary serological comparisons with all other spiroplasma isolates for which antisera are available indicate that GNAT3597 is an undescribed species.
