Epilogue - one hundred years of nemertean research: Burger (1895) to the present

The past one hundred years of research on nemerteans is reviewed. Scientific methodology and philosophy have advanced considerably during this period, yet nemerteans remain one of the least well known of invertebrate groups; nemerteans are not just members of a minor phylum, they constitute a neglected yet highly successful assemblage of animals. Despite many workers in the last hundred years having made significant contributions to our knowledge about this phylum of worms, many aspects of their biology are still virtually, if not totally, unknown, and the enormous advances in many areas of scientific knowledge have not been paralleled by comparable gains in our understanding of nemerteans.
