摘要
Despite advances that women have made in organizations over the past century, women continue to be underrepresented in upper management positions. Based on a review of literature, six issues that women face when encountering the glass ceiling were examined. The goal of the current study involved having women who have succeeded at breaking the glass ceiling in their own careers speak to these issues. Thematic analysis was used on data from qualitative interviews with seven women in different fields who have broken the glass ceiling at varying levels in their organizations. Collectively, responses provide suggestions for overcoming stereotypes, contending with the Old Boys network, balancing work and family, choosing mentors, understanding the queen bee syndrome, developing a leadership style, and determining personal aspirations for advancement. Results may serve as advice for women who face the glass ceiling in their own careers. Directions for future research are offered.
