Age-related phenotypic and function changes in immunity

Ageing is complex process negatively impacts the development of the immune system and its ability to function. Immune parameters were examined in 140 older (born 1932-1937) and 140 younger people (born 19771982). Analysis of costimulatory molecules, activation and adhesion markers on leukocytes were evaluated using flow cytometry. Decrease in basal values of expression of activation marker CD69 and CD3HLA-DR on leukocytes was observed in older population (p < 0.01). Older people had also significantly decreased expression of costimulatory molecule CD28 and CD95 and increased expression of memory cells CD45RO (P < 0.001) and CD62L (P < 0.05) on leukocytes. Proliferative response was significantly decreased (p < 0.001). Our findings showed that ageing is associated with alterations in several components of immunity.
