Galileo: a 'rehabilitation' that has never taken place

The media have repeatedly reported that Pope John Paul II had officially admitted the error of the Catholic Church as far as Galileo is concerned and 'rehabilitated' him. Apart from enthusiastic, often exaggerated, headlines and comments, careful considerations of the details of the Pope's initiative lead to a different picture: despite the good intentions expressed at the beginning of the process, 13 years later it ended up as a failure, since the Pope's summary is vague and useless.
