Structures for covering railways with real estate

Possibilities of realising real estate above railway infrastructure are studied because of a growing lack of space in inner city areas. The realisation of new buildings above existing railways involves, however, a complex process. New and innovative structural solutions can be used to enable constructing above tracks in such a way that it is financially and technically viable. For railways as well as for real estate, these (structural) solutions must comply with the demands that will be set for the flexibility to adapt to future changes. This paper discusses design considerations and basic structural solutions for such projects.
