Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) powder can be synthesized by the mixed solvothermal method under milder conditions (180220 degrees C, 4 h; 220 degrees C, 10 h) with inexpensive aluminum and yttrium hydroxides as the precursors, ethylenediamine and water solution as the solvent. The results show that the concentration of ethylenediamine and water solution, reaction temperature and the holding time are the main factors which affect the synthesis, and the existence of water is disadvantageous to the synthesis of pure YAG at low temperature. When the pure ethylenediamine was used as the solvent, the near-spherical with well-dispersed fine YAG grains were synthesized, and the size of the grains was 50 similar to 100 nm. The powder is the most desirable state for compacting and sintering of YAG ceramics.
