Galaxies at high redshift

We study galaxies at very high redshift because (1) we can, (2) it's fun (which keeps us motivated!), and (3) we can actually watch cosmic history unfolding, seeing galaxies form and evolve. NW are now able to find and study galaxies out to z approximate to 6, throughout most of cosmic time. In these lectures I review some of the observational techniques and important surveys that are used to find and study high redshift galaxies, and discuss some aspects of what we have learned by doing so. These include the evolution of galaxy morphologies, spectrophotometric properties, the nature of star-forming Lyman break galaxies at z approximate to 3, galaxy clustering at very large redshift, and our (as yet) limited knowledge of the population of galaxies at z > 5.
