THE ROMANIAN NATIONAL SPIRIT IN THE CONTEXT OF FOREIGN INFLUENCES ON THE 19TH CENTURY

Time of contradictions at the political level and, particularly, at the level of the literary ideas, the first half of the XIXth century represented, for the scholars of the Romanian provinces, a favourable moment to assert their national identity and to express their belonging to the Romanian community and the Latin roots. The specific elements (the unity of language and nation, the folklore, the historical past) constituted in favourite themes in the literary works of the time. The public reader, enthusiastic for a new writing, began to be interested in the productions of foreign literatures. Our approach aims to question the identity and cultural complex of the Romanian writers of the time in the context of the foreign influences.
