On May 16, 2002, Belgium's Parliament legalized active euthanasia. Now, a second country of European Union, alongside the Netherlands, has a law on euthanasia. The Belgian law also allows "death on request" for people whose mental suffering is seen as chronic. This ruling is a complete contradiction of the statement made by the World Association of Psychiatry (WPA) in 1996 in its Declaration of Madrid. In the light of ethical considerations, historical experience and reports concerning problems in the practice of euthanasia in the Netherlands, psychiatry cannot (once again) remain silent. Experts in the world of psychiatry should join those who have already formed a front against active euthanasia.
