An overview on environmentally-assisted fatigue crack propagation

摘要
The deleterious effect of the atmospheric environment on fatigue crack growth is studied on several metallic alloys including steels, Al and Ti based alloys. Tests with crack closure correction or without closure (Kmax constant tests) and tests in high vacuum are used to uncouple the effect of closure and of environment with respect to the alloy microstructure. The detrimental role of water vapor is analyzed on the basis of experiments conducted in gaseous environments with controlled partial pressures. Modeling of intrinsic and environmentally assisted crack growth is proposed.
