摘要：

Developments of the (fine) chemical industry over the period 1975-1995 are discussed in terms of growth in volume and efficiency. In particular the major changes in the fine chemical industry through the introduction of(bio)catalysis are shown. Prospects towards a sustainable (fine) chemical industry in the next century are presented.
