Development of a medicated nail lacquer for onychomycosis treatment

Fungal infections of the hands and feet are one of the most common infections in humans. Dermatophytes, yeasts and molds are the three main fungi that affect the skin, which can cause onychomycosis. In this research, a medicated lacquer was developed to treat fungal infections of the nails, that is onychomycosis, which has less toxicity than oral treatments. In addition, a spectrophotometric technique was developed and validated for the quantification of furvina (R) in lacquer, using 2-bromo-5-(2-bromo-2-nitrovinyl)-furan (furvina) at 0.25 % as Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient. This formulation proved to be active against Candida albicans strain ATCC 10231. Besides, an UV/vis spectrophotometric analytic technique with maximum absorption at 372 nm was developed and validated. This method was specific, precise, accurate and linear in the range of (1-5) mg/L. The detection and quantification limits for this technique were 0,1116 mg/L and 0,1460 mg/L, respectively.
