Experimental investigation of the tissue reaction to acrylic plastics (Reprinted from Acta Orthop Scand, vol 22, pg 141-146, 1952)

The article, Experimental Investigation of the Tissue Reaction to Acrylic Plastics, was chosen as the classic for this symposium because it represents one of the earliest efforts to determine the biocompatibility of acrylic plastics. The experiment was conducted in the laboratory of the Orthopaedic Hospital in Copenhagen, using methods available at the time. The preliminary conclusions of the experiment were significant. The lack of anp observable tissue reaction to the presence of the plastic material provided support and encouragement to orthopaedic surgeons who were anxious to use these materials to address clinical problems.
