Temperature dependence on shock response of stainless steel

Free surface velocity measurements were reported for HR-2(Cr-Ni-Mn-N) stainless steel, initially heated to 300K similar to 1000K and shock-compressed to about 8GPa. The corresponding spall strength sigma(f) and Hugoniot elastic limit sigma(HEL) were determined from the wave profiles. It is demonstrated that of and sigma(HEL) decrease linearly with increasing temperature T in the range from 300K to 806K, i.e., sigma(f) = 5.63 - 4.32 x 10(-3) T and sigma(HEL) = 2.08-154 x 10(-3) T, and in the range of 806K similar to 980K, sigma(HEL) increases from 0.84GPa at 806K to 0.93GPa at 980K, sigma(f) has a negligible increase to 2.15GPa from 2.14GPa. Primary TEM test on recovery samples identified the existence of intermatallic compound Ni3Ti in the sample of 980K.
