The subaltern vegetarianism in central India has proceeded on the assumption that those on the lower rungs of society or low castes give up eating meat out of a desire to change their social position. The experience of the subalterns provide an explanation of why people give up eating meat in the first place but it also helps understand why people continue to remain vegetarian. The split between vegetarians and meat-eaters must be correlated in order for them to be understood especially with reference to related transformation in local sociality and commensality. On the one hand, vegetarianism in India can also be understood through the study of their link with the control of witches.
