From aromatic molecules to carbon dust grains

摘要
Recent analysis of ISO spectra highlights the process of grain formation. In several environments of the interstellar medium, a new emission band at 16.4 mum has been detected. Comparison with laboratory experiments suggests that the dominant carriers are large aromatic molecules (PAHs) containing pentagonal rings. The implications of this result for the formation routes of carbon grains are discussed.
