This essay compares Jia Zhang-ke's Still Life (set at the site of the construction of the Three Gorges Dam) and Tsai Ming-liang's I Don't Want to Sleep Alone (set among penniless worker in Kuala Lumpur), finding aesthetic similarities that are offset by contrasting sensibilities, Tsai practicing a certain Zen resignation, Jia more socially engaged.
