Determination of the Intermetallic α-Phase Crystal Structure in Aluminum Alloys Solidified at Rapid Cooling Rates

Al-Fe-V-Si and Al-Fe-Cr-Si quaternary alloys were produced by arc melting and chill casting, and the crystal structures of the alpha-phase intermetallics (Pm-3 or Im-3, a = 1.25-1.27 nm) that formed are compared with those in the well-characterized Al-Mn-Si and Al-Fe-Mn-Si systems produced by arc melting. The crystal structures were refined using synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, and compositions were determined using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). It was shown that the Al-Fe-Cr-Si, Al-Fe-V-Si, and Al-Fe-Mn-Si systems appear to have the same alpha-phase structures after heat treatment at 500 degrees C. Additionally, a new alpha-phase with low Si content was observed in the Al-Fe-V-Si alloys in the as-cast condition.
