HVDC schemes and enabling technologies for large-scale wind power transmission

摘要：
This paper discusses the role of High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission within evolving network architectures. The application of HVDC links to transfer wind power from offshore wind farms to the nearest Grid Supply Point (GSP) is explored. An assessment of currently available HVDC technology such as Line-Commutated Converter-based HVDC (LCC-HVDC) and Voltage Source Converter-based HVDC (VSC-HVDC) is provided. In addition, the role that enabling technologies such as Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS devices), e.g Static Var Compensator (SVC) and Static Compensator (STATCOM), have in facilitating the system integration of large grid code-compliant onshore and offshore wind farms is illustrated and discussed.
