John Keats, the 19th century British romantic poet, has been well known for poems rich in imagination, and exerted great influence on poets of later generations. Yet questions remain as to the nature of his art of imagination, and the formation of his world of imagination. This paper holds that Keats' poetry presents rich connotations in the art of imagination such as personal temperament, free thought and social care. If analyzed in terms of his letters and poems, the reason why the art of imagination can be a success is that Keats practices in the way of negation in pursuit of the idea that poetry is craftwork of imagination.
