Barking Reach Power Station cooling water system

The underground cooling water system for the new 1000 MW Barking Reach Power Station on the Thames estuary east of London formed a major element of this privately funded $370 million turnkey project. A wide range of tunnelling and shaft sinking techniques were used to overcome the difficult ground conditions, which included the notorious Thanet Sand. Though many problems were encountered, the easy and direct contact between designers and constructors which was afforded by the design-and-construct approach helped to ensure that the award-winning project was completed on time and within budget.
