Greigite (Fe3S4) in an acid mudpool at Makiling volcano, the Philippines

摘要
The water of the only active mudpool at Makiling volcano, the Philippines, has a composition typical for the oxidation of sulfide minerals as indicated by an acid pH-value of 2.0 and a high salinity dominated by iron and sulfate. Model calculations show that the oxidation products in the mudpool water are subject to reduction leading to oversaturation of pyrite (FeS2). However, we found greigite (Fe3S4) as the only Fe-sulfide mineral amongst the suspended solids rather than pyrite. Greigite is an intermediate product in the formation of the thermodynamically more stable pyrite. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
