Mechanism of Iron Removal from Secondary Al-Si Melt by Boron Compounds and Mn

摘要
Effects of boron compound addition and the combined addition of boron compound and Mn on the modification of Fe-rich intermetallics and the removal of iron by settlement were studied in secondary Al-Si alloys. Microstructure morphology was observed by optical microscope (OM) and scanning electric microscope (SEM). Compositions and phases were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Phase-transition temperature of samples was examined by differential scanning calorimetric (DSC). It is indicated that the precipitation of primary Fe-rich intermetallics is caused by boron compound. The size of primary Fe-rich intermetallics increases with the higher content of Mn. When adding boron compound and Mn together, the content of Fe increases with the increasing distance from the top of the aluminum ingot and the iron content of the upper part of ingot is far lower than the original amount.
