Herniation of the small colon through the mesovar with hemorrhagic infarction of the ovary - a case report

A two-month-old warmblood foal was presented because of heavy colic symptoms. During clinical examination an increase of heart rate, respiratory rate, capillary refill time as well as absent intestinal peristalsis was discovered. Because of persistance of existing colic symptoms despite analgetic medications the foal-was anesthetized and surgery was performed. Abdominal exploration revealed a dammed small colon that was crossing through a gap in the mesovarium. The affected ovary was heavily enlarged showed hemorrhagic infarciation. In addition, the ovary showed cystic alteraltions. The ovary was removed after reposition of the small colon. Ten days after surgery the foal was dismissed from the hospital. A recheck two months after surgery showed that the suture was completely healed and the foal was in good general health condition.
