Influence of carbaryl on the carbohydrate levels in the tissues of common carp, Cyprinus carpio

The effects of carbaryl insecticide were examined in vivo on freshwater fish Cyprinus carpio. Toxicity tests were conducted to measure the influence of toxicity on carbohydrate levels in the liver and muscles of fish. The LC50 value of 96 h was considered as the lethal concentration, whereas one-third value of it was selected as sublethal concentration. Experiments were conducted for a period of 4-21 days, respectively. The levels of glucose and glycogen were determined by standard procedures in the liver and muscle tissues of unexposed (control) healthy fish and fish exposed to lethal concentrations of carbaryl for 4 days and sub-lethal concentrations for 21 days. The results showed a significant fall in the glycogen contents of the liver and muscles, whereas rise in glucose content of both the tissues following carbaryl exposure. The elevated levels of glucose are indicative of fish responses to toxicant stress.
