Aspects of tropospheric aerosols: Questions and ACE-2

A number of questions related to atmospheric aerosols will be tackled by IGAC's second Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE-2, Tenerife, summer 1997). In this paper we present these questions and review them in the light of the latest literature. Direct and indirect radiative forcing by anthropogenic aerosols is the main topic of ACE-2. We stress the importance of a complete aerosol charaterization (chemical mass closure) as a basis for any radiative forcing calculation. We propose a better focus on the effect of mixed aerosols, in particular aspects of mixing anthropogenic aerosols with dust, and an opening towards the role of aerosols in atmospheric chemistry in general.
