Fiberoptic light for oophorectomy at vaginal hysterectomy

Oophorectomy is more easily attempted during abdominal hysterectomy than transvaginally. Poor visualization, and therefore access and clamp slippage, are of major concern. Fiberoptic light through the speculum, a bladder retractor, and ovarian clamps can overcome fear and apprehension to facilitate a safe oophorectomy during vaginal hysterectomy. Liberal use of fiberoptic light is strongly recommended to promote oophorectomy during vaginal hysterectomy and avoid more invasive laparoscopic assistance.
