Comment on "Effects of aircraft overflights on wilderness recreationists" [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 100, 2909-2918 (1996)]

A psychologist outside the acoustics community considers the findings of Fidell et al. concerning the effects of aircraft overflights on wilderness recreationists [J. Acoust. Sec. Am. 100, 2009-2918 (1996)] in terms of other findings regarding visitor response to aircraft noise in wilderness areas and in light of current decision making about what actions are necessary to protect natural quiet in national parks. The limitations of a one-dimensional dose-response method that relies on annoyance as a global measure of the effect of park noise on visitors are discussed. (C) 1998 Acoustical Society of America.
