摘要
The following essay deals with the manner in which the topic of place is portrayed in two recent Northern Irish novels, Glenn Patterson's Northern Irish novels, Glenn Patterson's Burning Your Own and Robert MacLiam Wilson's Ripley Bogle. In both novels, place is a restrictive force that oppresses the young characters' growing identities. Because they grow up in Belfast in the late 1960s, both children see themselves pondering between the pressure to adjust to the pre-arranged roles offered by sectarian stereotypes, and the desire to find an alternative, more in accordance with their own expectations.
