Performance evaluation of a gigabit network multicast protocol

摘要
The QuickRing multicast protocol (QRMP) provides totally ordered delivery of multicast packets in a gigabit local-area network consisting of single or multiple slotted rings. The protocol is based on a buffer reservation strategy, and involves the use of voucher and Lamport timestamps and of a reservation/retract mechanism. This paper presents a simulation study of the performance of QRMP including throughput, latency, protocol overhead, and bandwidth utilization, as a function of network topology) propagation delay, network resources, and multicast communication pattern. The results show a small penalty in the cost/performance ratio for totally ordered delivery of multicast packets.
