Parthenin from Parthenium hysterophorus, its conversion to anhydroparthenin by conventional and microwave methods and their antimicrobial activity

Parthenin, sesquiterpenelactone has been isolated from the aerial parts of Parthenium hysterophorus along with stigmasterol, beta-sitosterol, isoparthenin, coronopilin and 11,13-dihydroparthenin. The compound has been converted into anhydroparthenin by conventional and microwave methods. The compouns were characterized by their spectral (IR mass; H-1, C-13 NMR) data and evaluated for their antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Fusarium oxysporum.
