THE SOURCE OF CHINESE LISTED COMMERCIAL BANKS' EFFICIENCY

摘要：
In the recent years, Chinese commercial banks have earned high profits. This paper tries to analyze the sources of Chinese commercial banks' efficiency with a two-stage DEA method. We have split the banks' efficiency into operational efficiency and market efficiency according to Chen & Zhu (2004) 's method. The findings indicate that big banks in China can even earn the highest profits in the world mostly because of market efficiency. Their operational efficiency is lower than in smaller banks. They have high market efficiency simply because they are monopolies in Chinese banking sector. So the highest profits do not mean Chinese commercial banks have improved their operational and managerial skills.
