A Windows-based, mixed-integer programming model for the development of integrated forest operations plans was created at the University of New Brunswick. This model allocates harvesting systems to available cut blocks, plans multi-mill wood deliveries and wood purchases, while integrating road (tertiary, access, secondary), stumpage, and silviculture costs into the plan. Equipment (trucks, harvesting machines) purchase decisions can be included in the model. This model was tested in the UNB 1995-96 senior undergraduate forest operations planning case study. This paper summarizes the model's ability to develop a multi-year operating plan in an industrial-strength case study. The structure of the formulated matrix is explained, detailing the decision variables and constraints of the model. The case study is then described and illustrated with some results from the optimal solution. Finally, the model's potential for use as a planning tool in other contexts is discussed.
