Phase Diagrams of Binary Systems Mg(NO3)2-KNO3, Mg(NO3)2-LiNO3 and ternary system Mg(NO3)2-LiNO3-NaNO3

Phase diagrams of magnesium nitrate-based molten salts were investigated by DSC measurement, including binary systems Mg(NO3)(2)-KNO3, Mg(NO3)(2)-LiNO3, and a portion of ternary system Mg(NO3)(2)-LiNO3-NaNO3. The results show that the melting point of the compound 2KNO(3)center dot Mg(NO3)(2) is found at 223.95 degrees C, and this compound does not have a solid state transition. Mg(NO3)(2)-KNO3 system has two eutectic transitions, one at 177.07 +/- 3 degrees C and the other at 192.51 +/- 1 degrees C for mixtures with 43.00 +/- 1 wt% KNO3 and 70.50 +/- 1 wt% KNO3, respectively; Mg(NO3)(2)-LiNO3 system is a simple eutectic system with one eutectic occurring at 209.23 +/- 1 degrees C for a mixture with 58.00 +/- 1 wt % LiNO3. Mg(NO3)(2)-LiNO3-NaNO3 ternary system has three eutectic curves and one ternary eutectic point at 132.39 +/- 2 degrees C for a mixture with 47.50 +/- 2 wt % Mg(NO3)(2), 13.50 +/- 2 wt % LiNO3, and 39.00 +/- 2 wt % NaNO3.
