Hydraulic drive system plays a critical and important role in blasthole drilling machines. Such machines are used for drilling the soft and the medium-hard formations of rocks in open-pit mines. In the present work, the dynamic analysis linked with a closed-circuit hydraulic drive system intended for the rotary head of blasthole drilling machine is executed in order to examine its performance with respect to two different operating conditions of the drilling machine. Based on this perspective, the comprehensive modelling, simulation and the testing of the drive have been carried out. Simulations are performed in MATLAB-Simulink environment. Under the conditions of steady-state nature of the model, the analytical relations among the loss coefficients associated with the drive and the other variables of the system are got by means of test investigations. Utilising them and the parametric values obtained from the manufacturer's data, the test validation corresponding to the overall dynamic model of the hydraulic drive system is accomplished. A thorough examination has been conducted focussing on the effects of the vital parameters upon the performance linked with the hydraulic drive system. The studies are also made with respect to the efficiency and the energy consumption of the drive.
