Comparative Imaging Pressure and Wall Shear Stress Measurements on a Circular Cylinder

Within the framework of the German Research Foundation's priority program SPP 1147 "Imaging Measurement Methods for Flow Analysis", three novel techniques to measure and visualize wall shear stress distributions and to detect unsteady surface pressure fluctuations were developed and will be described in detail. The flow around a finite wall mounted circular cylinder with a height-to-diameter ratio of H/D=2 was chosen as a reference experiment to compare and validate these methods using conventional, well established measurement, visualization and numerical techniques. Measurements were performed at a diameter based Reynolds number of Re-D= 2.10(5) and results for the cylinder base and the circumference will be presented for all three techniques.
