Whereas the access segment of data communications was a relatively late adopter of optical technologies compared with backbone and metro, it quickly became the math battleground. Based on Verizon's experience, we analyze the operator's broadband strategy, review the standardization landscape, and discuss recent innovations in optical access. (c) 2022 The Author(s)
