Practical aspects of energy conservation in pulp and paper mills

Energy conservation in the pulp and paper industry requires constant attention because of the ever-increasing pressures to cut operating costs. In the near future, the industry may also be obligated to reduce the use of fossil fuels to meet the greenhouse reduction target in the Kyoto protocol. This paper reviews, from the energy point of view, the technical basis of the pulp and paper mill that play the major in the consumption and generation of energy and demonstrates their interaction in the mill-wide energy system. A strategy is laid out for a results-oriented energy program to focus on both short- and long-term objectives.
