A spectroscopic survey of the XMM-Newton first light field in the LMC

The XMM-Newton first-light image covers a very X-ray active area in the Large Magellanic Cloud. In the field around the 30 Dor nebula in the northeast and supernova SN 1987A in the southwest one can see large-scale diffuse emission, extended emission from supernova remnants (SNRs) as well as point sources in the EPIC images. We have investigated broad band EPIC-PN (0.3 - 12 keV) energy spectra from various objects in the field like e.g. the SNR N 157B, the Honeycomb Nebula, SN 1987A, unidentified 'blue' point sources and also from diffuse emission. Using first versions for the detector response matrix we fit the spectra and derive temperatures and elemental abundances for the thermal emission components. Preliminary results show a variety of different temperatures and elemental abundances of the X-ray emitting hot gas.
