TEACHING THEMATIC CARTOGRAPHY WITH OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE: INKSCAPE

We present a learning experience where we teach how to perform thematic maps using a vector graphics design software, open source, called Inkscape. We believe that the use of Inkscape is an educational innovation because, from many years, there was need to equip students of cartography, in the degree in Geography, an appropriate tool to produce thematic maps. This tool, as described in the following communication, fulfils the objectives of facilitating the learning of this matter, and in addition the learning of a profession that can bring out a work for students of Geography. The communication describes the training needs of students of cartography, the main features of Inkscape and the practices that are carried out with students to produce thematic maps.
