Changes in bone metabolism in 8 sickle cell disease patients with previously documented low serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were monitored. Treatment with this metabolite of vitamin D caused a significant increase in serum levels of osteocalcin and a decrease in serum telopeptide of type I collagen, demonstrating improvements in bone turnover and mineralization.
