Between the Carrera de Indias and the Capitania General de las Costas de Andalucia. The Cadiz Garrison (1596-1635)

The purpose of this article is to shed light on the military revaluation of the Cadiz garrison after 1596 and in the first decades of the 17th century. This strategic reformulation was linked to the progressive transformation of the city into the center of the military apparatus of the Carrera de Indias. The transfer of the bulk of this military infrastructure was due to multiple factors, being decisive the will of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia, as capitanes generales del Mar Oceano y Costas de Andalucia.
