Effects of chord compression on OPB fire performance of CHS T-joints: An experimental study

Almost all previous experimental studies on the fire performance of steel circular hollow section (CHS) joints were conducted in the absence of external load in the chord [9-15, 17-19, 21-22, 24, 26-28]. This paper is focused on the chord compression effects on the fire performance of CHS T-joints under out-of-plane bending (OPB). Seven identical small-scale tubular specimens were tested under different combinations of axial compression in the chord, OPB in the brace, and the standard fire. It was found that the chord compression effect on the OPB of CHS T-joints significantly escalates under fire conditions, compared to that at ambient temperature. Dominant failure modes in the specimens tested were local buckling of the chord face around brace/chord intersection, crippling/bulging of the chord sidewalls, and flexural yielding of the brace.
