Empress Maria Theresa, on the advice of her protomedicus Gerard van Swieten, appointed Joseph Barth on 23 October 1773 "in view of his possessive special dexterity in eye diseases, eye operations, and finer anatomy as a public teacher in this science at the local university". This birth of ophthalmology as the first clinical specialty is reason enough for this historical review of two and a half centuries of the Vienna School of Ophthalmology and the clinic directors over the course of these years.
