Es gibt Hinweise auf Inflammation als Determinante in der Pathogenese der Parkinson-Krankheit. Ob die entzundliche Kaskade Ursache oder Folge des Dopamin-Neuronentods sind, ist nicht klar. In einer Zwei-Stichproben Studie unter Verwendung der Mendelschen Randomisierung, sollte der kausale Zusammenhang von Entzundung und Parkinson-Krankheit untersucht werden, um das Risiko von Verzerrungen zu reduzieren, die in Beobachtungsstudien ublich sind.
