Efficacy of Autologous Platelet Concentrates in the Treatment of Oral Mucosal Lesions: A Systematic Review

Oral mucosal diseases are those which affect lining of oral cavity, and the diseases that have received much attention are those concerned with autoimmunity and premalignancy. There is no conclusive evidence reported in effective management of oral mucosal lesions using autologous platelet concentrates. This systematic review aims at evaluating autologous platelet concentrates in the treatment of oral mucosal diseases. An article search was carried out in five electronic databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, US National Registry of Clinical Trials, ProQuest). Data were analyzed qualitatively. Eleven articles were included in this study. Seven of the studies were randomized-controlled trials, and four were of quasi-experimental designs. Autologous platelet concentrates in the treatment of oral mucosal lesions were evaluated, and the included studies showed efficacy of intralesional and topical autologous platelet concentrates in management of Oral Lichen Planus, Pemphigus Vulgaris, Benign Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid, and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.
