摘要：

This article aims to investigate the thinking and political vocabulary of Cipriano Barata, through understanding the meanings attributed to concepts such as federalism, confederation and constitution defended by him in the periodical Sentinela da Liberdade na Guarita de Pernambuco. Alerta!, in the year 1823. Thus, we intend to contribute, from the perspective of the history of concepts, to political and social history in the context of Brazil's independence and with a focus on Pernambuco, where Cipriano Barata worked and proposed ideas and principles of organization of the national State distinct from the Bragantino imperial project.
